Options for High-Risk Prenatal Conditions

Many pregnant individuals benefit from referrals for medically tailored meals (MTM). According to Health.gov, “When you’re pregnant, you need more of certain nutrients — like protein, iron, folic acid, iodine, and choline.” Some pregnant people have a higher risk of experiencing complications or health issues unless they carefully monitor their diet and overall health. LifeSpring Home Nutrition helps people establish a healthy diet to reduce the risk of prenatal conditions.

The Importance of Proper Nutrition During Pregnancy

Pregnant people must eat enough essential nutrients for themselves and their developing baby. Healthy meals allow people to get the necessary nutrients without adding additional calories. Often, people believe “eating for two” means eating a significantly larger portion of food. However, pregnant people only need an extra 340 to 450 calories a day during the second and third trimesters. A single recommended serving or less of many healthy foods is all it takes to add additional calories to a person’s diet.

Quality of food is critical. Nutritional health during pregnancy can have life-long consequences for mothers and their babies. According to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a healthy diet during pregnancy “can be achieved by basing diet on a variety of nutrient-dense, whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, healthy fats with omega-3 fatty acids that include nuts and seeds, and fish, in place of poorer quality highly processed foods.”

What Are Some High-Risk Prenatal Conditions?

Pregnant people may have an increased risk of experiencing prenatal conditions affecting their overall health and the health of their baby. Diet and nutrition are crucial in reducing the risk of prenatal complications or conditions. According to Health.gov, “Most women who are pregnant do not consume enough fruits, vegetables, dairy, and seafood, while consuming too much added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium.”

Replacing empty calories, excessive sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars with nutritional meals does the following:

  • Boosts immune system
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Reduces excessive weight gain
  • Improves sleep
  • Reduces the risk of gestational diabetes and other conditions

Nutritional meals decrease the risk of pregnancy complications and improve overall mental and physical health. LifeSpring Home Nutrition offers meal plans tailored to each pregnant person’s unique needs and preferences. Below are some prenatal conditions healthy meals help people avoid or manage during pregnancy.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

Pre-existing conditions, including obesity and hypertension, may increase the risk of prenatal health issues. Dietary changes make it easier for people to manage these conditions.

Some of the most common pre-existing conditions for pregnant people include:

  • Depression and other mental health disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease

Some mothers may have multiple co-occurring pre-existing health conditions. Nutrition plays an essential role in protecting people and helping them better manage pre-existing health issues during pregnancy.

Multiple Pregnancies

People pregnant with more than one baby at a time may experience greater health risks. According to Nutrients, “Multiple pregnancies are a special phenomenon . . . The presence of more than one fetus may lead to increased metabolic requirements and a faster depletion of maternal macro- and micro- nutrient reserves than in a singleton pregnancy.” People with multiple pregnancies may need additional vitamins and minerals in their diet to compensate for changes within their body. The dedicated registered dietician (RD) at LifeSpring Home Nutrition collaborates with pregnant clients to create individualized meal plans designed to reduce risks during multiple pregnancies.

Excessive Weight Gain or Lack of Weight Gain May Cause Prenatal Conditions

Significant weight gain, a lack of weight gain, and noticeable weight loss may negatively affect pregnant people. Often, extreme weight fluctuations during pregnancy are caused by an unhealthy diet. Prenatal obesity is known to cause significant health issues for babies as they grow and develop. In addition, exposure to higher levels of insulin and lipids in the womb can cause problems later in life. According to the previously mentioned article by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, “[M]aternal overnutrition plays an important role in the early origins of childhood obesity and inflammatory diseases, such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the most common liver disease worldwide affecting 1 in 3 youth with obesity.”

Home-delivered meals reduce the risk of obesity by providing carefully monitored and planned meals. People also have an easier time maintaining portion control when they eat pre-made meals.

Preeclampsia

Some people experience a complication of pregnancy called preeclampsia. Individuals diagnosed with this condition may experience the following:

  • High blood pressure
  • Protein in urine
  • Water retention
  • Swelling in legs

Often, the symptoms of preeclampsia are mistaken for typical pregnancy side effects. However, if left unaddressed, preeclampsia can lead to severe health issues for mother and child. Proper nutrition is essential for individuals with an increased risk for preeclampsia.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Pregnant people may experience health issues caused by pregnancy. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a condition where hormones from the placenta interfere with the body’s natural ability to manage insulin. According to the previously mentioned article by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, “When a woman receives a diagnosis of GDM, regardless of the exact diagnostic criteria, nutrition therapy is the first line of treatment.” Often, pregnant people with GDM benefit from MTMs. LifeSpring Home Nutrition also offers diabetic-friendly meal options for mothers diagnosed with GDM.

Home-Delivered Meals Reduce the Risk of Prenatal Conditions

MTMs offer pregnant people additional nutritional support and help them improve overall health by providing a more balanced diet. MTMs are designed to meet specific dietary needs and reduce the risk of prenatal health conditions. LifeSpring Home Nutrition collaborates with clients and their care team to ensure they receive personalized meals to meet their needs during pregnancy.
