Foods for Reducing Inflammation

Inflammation is a common symptom of chronic and acute health issues. Treating or managing inflammation is an important part of recovery for many people diagnosed with medical conditions. According to Biomedicines, “Inflammation is a physiological process . . . if it becomes chronic, inflammation can end up stimulating the development of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, neurological disease, or cancer.” People reduce or manage inflammation through diet and lifestyle changes. LifeSpring Home Nutrition provides tailored home-delivered meals ideal for reducing inflammation.

What Foods Cause Inflammation?

Some foods exacerbate or cause inflammation in certain areas of the body. Everyone reacts differently to foods depending on multiple factors, including their general health and family medical history. People with a higher risk of autoimmune disorders should avoid foods that may cause inflammation.

Some foods known to cause inflammation include:

  • Red meats and highly processed meats
  • Baked goods and pasta made with white flour
  • Deep-fried foods high in saturated fats

Inflammation is a common symptom of many food allergies and sensitivities. For example, someone with tomato sensitivity may experience joint pain like arthritis if they frequently eat foods with a high tomato content. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), “Food allergies can be life-threatening. A sensitivity or intolerance to a food can be uncomfortable, but it is rarely life-threatening.” People who believe they may have food allergies or sensitivities should get tested to ensure they avoid potentially harmful foods.

Reducing Inflammation Through Diet and Lifestyle Changes

Diet and lifestyle changes are often important steps in reducing inflammation for individuals with chronic health conditions. According to the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, “Multiple intervention studies have demonstrated that lifestyle changes can lead to reduced inflammation and improved health.” Leaving inflammation untreated can cause additional health issues. “Chronic low-grade inflammation has been shown to either induce or aggravate metabolic disturbances, including insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, which contributes to the development of other complications.” Making lifestyle changes to reduce inflammation decreases a person’s risk of preventable diseases.

Some of the potential lifestyle changes people make to reduce inflammation include:

  • Staying hydrated
  • Regular physical exercise
  • Successfully managing weight
  • Improving the quality of sleep
  • Limiting the use of alcohol and tobacco products

Making multiple positive lifestyle changes and eating anti-inflammatory foods may reduce the symptoms of inflammation.

Reducing Inflammation Using Medically Tailored Meals

Medically tailored meals (MTMs) are meal plans designed with input from nutritional experts, medical professionals, or healthcare providers. Individuals benefit from MTMs if they have medical conditions impacting how their body absorbs food. People with food sensitivities or other issues may require a personalized meal plan to ensure they get the right amount of vitamins and minerals in their daily meals. LifeSpring Home Nutrition partners with community programs to ensure vulnerable populations, including older adults, children, people with disabilities, and disadvantaged individuals, have access to meals tailored to their medical needs.

Inflammation can have different causes, including:

  • Oxidative stress
  • Age-related health issues
  • Chronic stress
  • Environmental factors
  • Injury or illness

Medically tailored meals help people recover from the effects of various environmental or health issues. MTMs allow people to better manage chronic health conditions. According to Exploratory Research in Clinical and Social Pharmacy, “Providing medically-tailored meals significantly increases dietary adherence above 90% and allows patients to realize significantly better chronic disease control.”

People are more likely to follow the dietary advice of their doctor or other medical professionals if they use MTMs to manage their condition. Individuals who receive home-delivered meals may also have better outcomes and experience fewer long-term side effects compared to individuals who do not receive MTMs.

Health Conditions Treated With Dietary Changes

Some medical conditions are treated successfully with dietary changes. For example, individuals with type 2 diabetes may experience complete remission from the condition if they adopt a healthier diet and exercise regularly. A few other conditions people may treat using dietary changes include:

  • Heart disease
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Neurodegenerative diseases
  • Obesity

Inflammation is a common symptom of many treatable diseases. Ensuring meals include more anti-inflammatory foods can help people heal more effectively and reduce long-term side effects. Every person has different symptoms and underlying factors impacting their health. LifeSpring Home Nutrition works with each client to ensure they have access to the best diet to support their continued health and well-being.
